Adding a bit of data to Laura's rust removing experiment ( original here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPaFv2FLDKI ) I took a few very rusted Harbor Freight tools and submerged them in Aldi 5% white vinegar for ~19 hours. After 2 hours they were substantially cleared but I let them soak for ~19...rinsed them and put them out to dry. They are not as clean as I initially though BUT if I use a wire brush or wire wheel on them for a few minutes they should be good. I probably should have let them go for 48 hours...Laura used 10% vinegar. Another approach would be to bring the solution to boiling which would probably increase the activity of the acid...before and after below:
