Adding a bit of data to Laura's rust removing experiment ( original here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPaFv2FLDKI ) I took a few very rusted Harbor Freight tools and submerged them in Aldi 5% white vinegar for ~19 hours. After 2 hours they were substantially cleared but I let them soak for ~19...rinsed them and put them out to dry. They are not as clean as I initially though BUT if I use a wire brush or wire wheel on them for a few minutes they should be good. I probably should have let them go for 48 hours...Laura used 10% vinegar. Another approach would be to bring the solution to boiling which would probably increase the activity of the acid...before and after below:
Wow, I will have to remember this. I have a few rusty tools I will try this on. :-)
ReplyDeleteI was impressed at how well it worked. I should have heated the vinegar and left it sit for 48 hours but what I have can be cleaned up with a wire brush...and this is cheap 5% white vinegar...not the expensive 10-20-30% stuff...I agree...it's a great, cheap & simple trick that works!
DeleteI also discovered that my phone camera has a macro setting! Wish I knew that years ago!
ReplyDeleteHaha, I discover things all the time about my phone and my camera that I didn't know
DeleteIn my younger days I'd ALWAYS read the manual so I understood all the features of a new piece of equipment...now I'm happy if I can turn it on & off and get it to do a few things...that said the macro feature is REALLY nice to know about!
